“My name is Christina Narayanan. What makes me different to all the other designers.....?
I am not a boutique designer. I design everyday spaces for everyday people.”
After originally training in the health industry and practicing in the industry for nine years, I started a family. Looking for a more creative career challenge, I decided to use this time to retrain in a profession that I was passionate about. This led me to a course in Interior Design through the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, where I graduated with a Certificate in Interior Design. As my children were still young I trained further, completing the Landscape Design Course through Stotts College. I thoroughly enjoyed both courses, and eagerly embraced the design concepts and processes of both indoor and outdoor spaces.
I then worked as a kitchen designer for Moda Kitchens, creating beautiful workable spaces for dozens of Wellington families. This I enjoyed immensely, as with the push towards open plan living, the kitchen had become the heart of the home and a critical design space. It was during this time that I developed my personal ethos:
Create a space that functions first – and then create the look you are trying to achieve.
I thoroughly enjoy dealing with customers one on one and finding out what is important to them. I love to help people navigate through the design process – to achieve a space unique to them. I believe that my background in interior design, landscape design and kitchen design gives me a fantastic skill set and platform, to help create fantastic interior and exterior spaces.
I now run my own business as an interior designer and colour consultant, while working for the Open Polytechnic of NZ as an adjunct tutor in their design and decorating course. Not many people have the luxury of working in a job they are passionate about. I guess that makes me one of the lucky ones.
“Christina helped us in designing our new kitchen. She listened to what we wanted and together we comprised a ‘wishlist’. This was then transformed into plans. The final plans took into account our budget and the individual needs of our family. Christina’s attention to detail was exceptional, both the design and colour schemes were just what we wanted.
Christina took the stress out of designing our kitchen with her friendly manner and professional approach.”
